Stay Safe in Tenerife – Avoiding Scams, Pickpockets and Emergencies

Tenerife is generally very safe, but like any popular tourist destination, it's good to stay aware. Learn about common scams, what to do if something goes wrong, emergency numbers, and practical safety tips to enjoy worry-free island adventures.

Stay Safe in Tenerife – Avoiding Scams, Pickpockets and Emergencies

Tenerife is generally a very safe destination. The island is welcoming, locals are friendly, and serious crime is rare.

However, like any popular tourist destination, there are small scams and petty crimes that travelers should be aware of.

This simple guide explains what to watch out for and what to do if something goes wrong during your trip.

1. Common Scams & Petty Crime

The Scratch Card Scam: Sometimes promoters on promenades offer free scratch cards that appear to win luxury prizes.

These are usually invitations to long timeshare presentations. The safest option is to politely decline and continue walking.

Pickpockets in Crowded Areas: Busy places such as markets, nightlife areas, and crowded promenades can attract pickpockets.

Keep wallets and phones in front pockets or secure zipped bags.

Street Vendors ("Looky Looky" sellers): Some vendors offer imitation sunglasses, watches, or handbags.

Buying from them is technically illegal and the quality is usually poor. A simple "No gracias" is enough to decline.

2. Car Safety

Rental cars can sometimes attract opportunistic thieves, especially near remote hiking areas.

Never leave valuables inside your vehicle. Even bags with towels may attract attention.

A useful tip is to leave the glove box open and empty so that it is obvious there is nothing worth stealing.

Pro tip: Park in well-lit areas and always double-check that your car is locked

3. What To Do If You Lose Documents or Are Robbed

Step 1: Report the incident to the police. You will need a police report for insurance claims or embassy assistance.

Step 2: If your passport has been stolen, contact your embassy or consulate. They can issue emergency travel documents.

Step 3: Cancel or block your credit cards immediately through your banking application.

4. Emergency Numbers

  • 112 – General emergency number (ambulance, fire services and police). Operators speak multiple languages including English.
  • 091 – National Police
  • 092 – Local Police

Save these numbers in your phone before you travel. The 112 number works from any phone, even without a SIM card.

5. Health and Sun Safety

The biggest risk for many visitors is actually the sun. Tenerife has very strong UV levels, even during winter.

Stay hydrated, wear sunscreen and avoid long exposure during the middle of the day.

Occasionally the island experiences "Calima", a hot wind carrying dust from the Sahara.

During these days temperatures rise significantly, so limit heavy outdoor activities.

When swimming in the ocean always respect the beach flags. A red flag means swimming is dangerous due to strong currents.

Quick Safety Checklist

  • Decline timeshare scratch cards politely
  • Keep valuables in secure, zipped pockets
  • Never leave items visible in rental cars
  • Save emergency numbers (112, 091, 092) in your phone
  • Wear high SPF sunscreen and stay hydrated
  • Respect beach flag warnings
  • Have travel insurance with good coverage
  • Keep digital copies of important documents

Ocean Safety Tips

Tenerife's beaches are beautiful, but the Atlantic Ocean can have strong currents and waves.

Always swim at beaches with lifeguards present, especially if you're traveling with children.

If you get caught in a rip current, don't panic or swim directly against it. Swim parallel to the shore until you're out of the current, then swim back to land.

Hiking Safety

If you're hiking Mount Teide or other mountain trails:

  • Tell someone your hiking plans and expected return time
  • Bring plenty of water (more than you think you need)
  • Wear proper footwear with good grip
  • Check weather conditions before departing
  • Download offline maps in case you lose signal
